Over the years, Rick developed a love for plants, flowers, etc., so he went to night school for 5 years at Richland College in Dallas and earned an Associate Degree in Ornamental Horticulture in May 2007. Subsequently, he joined the Texas Nursery and Landscape Association and became a Texas Certified Nursery Professional (#5430). In January 2007, Rick began volunteering at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden where he gives tours and does other volunteer work. In 2016 and 2017, he was the Chairman of the Dallas Arboretum’s Volunteer Advisory Board. His other horticulture volunteer work has included being a telephone call screener for Neil Sperry’s Texas Gardening radio show on WBAP Sunday mornings from 8:00AM to 10:00AM.

Rick grew up in Austin, Texas where he spent much of his time playing tennis. He was the 5th ranked high school tennis player in Texas and attended Texas A&M where he lettered on the tennis team for 3 years. He was in the Corps of Cadets and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant upon graduation in 1966 with a degree in finance.  He spent three years in the U.S. Army primarily as a helicopter pilot. Those 3 years included one in Cu Chi, Vietnam where he was a helicopter gunship platoon leader. He received the Bronze Star, Air Medal for Valor, and a Purple Heart among other decorations.

Most of his post-Army career was spent working for the Social Security Administration in the Dallas Regional Office, and he retired from SSA in January 2007. He has been married to his wife Janet for 45 years and raised two wonderful boys.  Damon graduated from the University of Texas in Austin in 1998 with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and Jeremy graduated from Texas A&M in 2001 with a degree in Construction Science. While raising his sons, he went to night school at the University of Texas at Dallas and earned a Masters degree in Management and Administrative Sciences.

When Rick retired in January 2007 he decided to enter politics. In May 2007, he was elected as a City Councilman in the City of Garland--the12th largest City in Texas (population 228,000).  A year later he was honored by his council colleagues when they chose him to serve as the Mayor Pro Tem. Rick’s term as a Councilman ended May 21, 2013 due to term limits
